Driver Who Hit Pedestrian in SE Portland Arrested

A driver who hit a pedestrian in Southeast Portland on Friday has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII).

Police said the crash happened near Southeast Grand Avenue and Southeast Morrison Street a little after 7 p.m. It resulted in the hours-long closure of the road and two exits off Interstate 5. The Portland Streetcar in the area was also impacted.

Officers reported that the pedestrian was a woman who was walking on the sidewalk when she was hit. They said she suffered serious injuries, but they did not believe her injuries are life-threatening.

The driver reportedly struck a lamppost before hitting the woman and crashing into the glass at the front of the Portland Running Company store off Southeast Grand Avenue.

A manager of the store told FOX 12 staff that the alarm company notified him about the crash.

No additional details, including the name of the driver, were immediately available for release.

In Oregon, you can be charged with a DUII if:

  • You have a blood alcohol content of .08% or more
  • You’re under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, a controlled substance or an inhalant

There are mandatory minimum sentences in place for DUII convictions. The penalties become harsher depending on how many previous convictions the defendant has and when they occurred.

A first offense is punishable by:

  • 48 hours to a year in jail or 80 hours of community service
  • At least $1,000 in fines
  • License suspension for one year

Judges have the discretion to impose additional penalties based on factors like criminal history, and whether the offense involved injuries.
