Man Arrested After Police Pursuit Faces DUI and Other Charges

A man was arrested by the Garden City Police in Idaho after he attempted to flee the police officers. The police were responding to a report of domestic violence at the time.

According to the details shared by the police, they were notified of the incident of domestic violence at around 7:19 p.m. on Sunday, March 1. As the police arrived on the scene to apprehend the suspect, he escaped. The suspect was identified by the police as Charles Cortez, 40, of Garden City.

The police later spotted Cortez’s vehicle and attempted to stop him. However, he fled the traffic stop which led to a police pursuit of the vehicle. According to the police, Cortez intentionally struck one of the patrol vehicles during the pursuit. He later drove to the residence of the domestic violence victim and hit the vehicle of the victim parked in front of the residence.

He was then apprehended by the police. According to the Garden City Police officers, Cortez appeared highly intoxicated when he was arrested. He was then booked into the Ada County Jail.

The police have brought a number of charges against Cortez. These include misdemeanor driving under influence or DUI, felony domestic battery, felony assault on an officer, misdemeanor fleeing an accident site, and felony eluding.

Many of these are fairly serious charges and carry stiff penalties in the Idaho. Compared to most other charges that Cortez faces, the misdemeanor DUI charge is relatively light. The penalties for the charge include up to 6 months in jail or a fine of up to $1,000 or both.

Felony assault on an officer carries a penalty of up to five years in prison, depending on the circumstances of the case. For felony domestic battery, the punishment includes a prison term of up to ten years with a fine of up to $10,000.
