According to a new Idaho State Police online data dashboard on crime in Idaho, the state’s largest cities aren’t the ones where you’re most likely to be a victim of violent crime. In fact, smaller counties had the highest DUI rates statewide in 2020.
The dashboard, which has been released recently, had data in it that indicated a big difference between the number of crimes that happen and the crime rate typically stated in headlines on crime trends.
In 2020, the rates of homicides, assaults, sexual offenses, and other crimes defined as crimes against persons in the state’s two most populous counties — Ada and Canyon — were at or near the statewide average. However, the number of victims was substantially larger than in many counties with higher crime rates due to demographic differences.
There is a massive decline in the number of criminal offenses against people and victims. Criminal crimes against people decreased from 14.253 per 1,000 people in 2005 to 9.954 per 1,000 people in 2020. In the year 2005, there were 20,330, and it declined to 17,776 in the year 2020.
Twin Falls, Bannock, and Shoshone were the three Idaho counties with the highest crime rates against people in 2020.
With a rate of 10.275 per 1,000 people and 2,431 victims, Canyon County was the 11th most populous in Idaho. Ada County has Idaho’s 13th highest rate of crimes against people (9.615 per 1,000), but the most victims (4,771).
In 2005, the statewide rate of drug and alcohol offenses was slightly over 16 per 1,000. Compared to 22,840 arrests in the year 2005, there were only 20,264 arrests in 2020.
The dashboard also shows that counties with the highest rates of drug and alcohol offenses tended to have smaller populations.
While only 39 arrests were reported in Clark County, the rate there was the state’s highest (46.595 per 1,000). Caribou and Shoshone counties, with 151 and 262 arrests, had the second and third-highest rates (a little over 20 per 1,000).
The highest DUI rates are also prevalent in two of Idaho’s more tourist-oriented counties. With 7.438 arrests per 1,000 people in 2020, Blaine County had the highest rate. The total number of DUI arrests was 174. With 74 total DUI arrests, Valley County is ranked third.
The second-highest DUI rate for 2020 is Clark County. With the population being just over 790, there were just five arrests. The rate was 5.974 per 1000 people.
