|

During the 4th of July weekend special Boise police patrolling, a brief shootout occurred.

Following the developments, the man accused has been identified. The man has been identified as a 25-year-old, Ezra Smith. He rammed a stolen U-haul van into the police patrolling vehicle. He was later chased down in two phases.

The officers first decided to chase him down but stopped the chase midway due to possible dangers to other drivers, speed, and reckless driving. Initially, the officers were called to the Overland and Cole area by the people for a suspected DUI and reckless driving case on Sunday night around 7:00 pm i.e., 11th July 2021.

The man was later taken into custody after at least one police officer had to shot him. He was shot down when he was later spotted near Riley Court. During this chase, the Smith rammed the vehicle into the patrolling vehicle, as reported by Boise Police Department. In an attempt to run away, he rammed into vehicles multiple times.

Currently, he is admitted to the local hospital and is stable. As a repercussion of this event, he will be charged with multiple felonies like attempting to elude from the accident scene, assaulting the police officer, theft charges, and malicious property damage.

No police officer was injured in the process. The number of officers that shot him down is yet not released. Further investigation on the shooting by The Ada County Critical Incident Task Force is on.

The police officers, D. Skube and R. Denny are on paid leave as per department policy following the event. Both the police officers are veteran police officers serving the police department for eight years.
